TL;DR: Be respectful, don't abuse the service, and understand that Altair is open-source software provided "as is" without warranties. We're all in this together to build better tools for the ADHD community.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By downloading, installing, or using Altair (the "Software"), you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions. If you don't agree, please don't use Altair.
2. Alpha Software Disclaimer
Important: Altair is currently in alpha stage. This means:
- Features may be incomplete or unstable
- Bugs and data loss are possible (always back up your data!)
- The software is under active development and may change significantly
- We make no guarantees about uptime, stability, or data integrity
3. License and Open Source
Altair is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0). This means:
- You can: Use, study, modify, and distribute the software
- You must: Make source code available if you modify and distribute it
- Network use: If you run a modified version on a server, you must share the source code with users
- Full license: Available at github.com/getaltair/altair
4. Acceptable Use Policy
You May:
- Use Altair for personal productivity
- Use it in a commercial setting for your own work
- Self-host your own instance
- Modify the source code for your own use
You May Not:
- Use the service for illegal activities
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to systems
- Interfere with other users' ability to use the service
- Scrape, data mine, or harvest data from other users
- Distribute malware or malicious code
- Impersonate others or misrepresent your affiliation
- Spam, phish, or send unsolicited communications
5. Intellectual Property
Our Content
- The Altair name, logo, and branding are proprietary to the project
- The source code is licensed under AGPL-3.0
- Documentation and website content may have different licenses
Your Content
- You retain all rights to your tasks, notes, and data
- Your data is stored locally on your device
- You can delete your data at any time
6. Third-Party Services
Altair may integrate with third-party services:
- AI providers (OpenAI, Anthropic): You provide your own API keys; subject to their terms
- Newsletter (Buttondown): Subject to Buttondown's terms and privacy policy
- Self-hosted components: Your responsibility to comply with relevant terms
7. Disclaimers and Limitations
Legal Notice: This section limits our liability. Please read carefully.
No Warranty
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Warranties of merchantability
- Fitness for a particular purpose
- Non-infringement
- Error-free operation
- Data accuracy or integrity
Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR:
- Data loss or corruption
- Service interruptions or downtime
- Business losses or missed opportunities
- Indirect, incidental, or consequential damages
- Any damages exceeding $100 USD or amount paid (whichever is greater)
8. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from:
- Your use of Altair
- Your violation of these terms
- Your violation of any third-party rights
- Your data or content
9. Changes to Terms
We may update these terms from time to time:
- Notice: Significant changes will be announced via email and in-app
- Effective date: Changes take effect 30 days after announcement
- Continued use: Using Altair after changes means you accept the new terms
- Disagreement: If you don't agree, stop using the service and delete your account
10. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States. Disputes shall be resolved through:
- Good faith negotiation first
- Mediation if negotiation fails
- Arbitration or courts of the State of Texas as a last resort
11. Community Guidelines
Altair is built by and for the ADHD community. We expect:
- Respect: Treat others with kindness and understanding
- Inclusivity: Welcome people of all backgrounds
- Constructive feedback: Criticism should be helpful, not harmful
- Support: Help each other succeed
- Privacy: Respect others' privacy and boundaries

13. Severability
If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full effect.
14. Entire Agreement

Open Source Spirit: We're all working together to build better tools for the ADHD community. These terms exist to protect everyone involved, but they're not meant to be scary. If something is unclear, just ask!
