Our Commitment to Privacy

Altair is built for the ADHD community, by the ADHD community. We understand that trust is earned, not given. This privacy policy explains exactly what data we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it.

1. Data Collection and Storage

Local-First Architecture

Altair uses a local-first architecture, which means:

• Your tasks, notes, and inventory data are stored locally on your device in a SQLite database
• No internet connection required for core functionality
• You own your data - it's stored in an open format you can access directly
• Optional sync - you choose if and when to sync to our servers

Website and Newsletter

When you visit getaltair.app or subscribe to our newsletter:

• Newsletter subscriptions are managed by Buttondown and subject to their privacy policy
• Basic analytics (if implemented) use privacy-friendly alternatives like Plausible or Fathom that don't use cookies or track individuals
• No advertising cookies - we don't serve ads or use ad networks

2. AI Features (Optional)

Altair offers optional AI-powered features for task breakdown and prioritization:

• Local models (Ollama): Runs entirely on your device, no data leaves your computer
• Cloud AI (OpenAI/Anthropic): If you choose to use cloud AI:
  • You provide your own API keys
  • Task data is sent directly from your device to the AI provider
  • We never see or store this data on our servers
  • Subject to the AI provider's privacy policy

3. What We Don't Do

• We don't sell your data - ever, to anyone
• We don't share your data with third parties for their marketing
• We don't use invasive tracking - no fingerprinting, no cross-site tracking
• We don't require data we don't need - minimal data collection by design

4. Data Retention

• Local data: Stored on your device until you delete it
• Newsletter data: Retained until you unsubscribe

5. Your Rights (GDPR & CCPA)

You have the right to:

• Access your data - download everything we have about you
• Correct your data - fix any inaccuracies
• Delete your data - remove your account and all associated data
• Export your data - portable format for use elsewhere
• Opt out - decline optional features and data collection

6. Security

We take security seriously:

• All data transmission uses TLS encryption
• Passwords are hashed using industry-standard cryptographic algorithms
• Regular security audits of our open-source codebase
• Two-factor authentication available for accounts

7. Children's Privacy

Altair is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe we have, please contact us immediately.

8. Open Source Transparency

Altair is open source (AGPL-3.0). You can:

• Review our code on GitHub
• Self-host your own instance with full control
• Audit our data handling practices
• Contribute to privacy improvements

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We'll notify you of significant changes via:

• In-app notification
• Email (if you're subscribed)
• Announcement on our website
